Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 23rd August

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle saw an increased entry of 348 forward. There was a better show of cattle on offer this week that saw quality and meatier types sell to a slightly sharper trade with plainer types remaining very similar. Native cattle remain in strong demand at Lancaster with a consignment of Angus bullocks from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, selling to £1220 and £1190, with two pens of five. H Morgan, Stalmine sold Angus bullocks to £1220 with a pen of 3 Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton selling to £1200. Continental bullocks sold to a top of £1170 for Bazadaise from FA Nowell & Parnters, Bentham and Simmentals from H Morgan. Limousin bullocks sold to £1160 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Plenty of other strong Continental and Native bullocks sold easily around and in excess of the £1100 mark. Heifers sold to £1090 for a Hereford from J Hesketh, Hutton with Angus heifers selling to £1080. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliardes and Norwegian Reds sell to £960 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby.

OTM Cattle

There was a slightly smaller entry of 105 cast cows forward with a shortage of well-meated cows and the trade very comparable to last week. OTM Bullocks sold to a top of 164.5p/kg for Angus’ with Herefords selling to 159.5p/kg. OTM Heifers topped at 159.5p/kg for Limousins from R Esthborn and RH & RA Fawcett, Burton. Cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg for Limousins from SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe. Meated dairy cows often sold in the mid to late one twenties. Top price per head was a cast shorthorn bull selling to £1078 from TW & BH Woodhouse & Partners, Roeburndale, closely followed by £1068 for a Saler bull from JJ & J Woof & Son, Dent with Swedish Red Cows selling to £1035 from DJ A & L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh.

Calves and Stirks

There was 79 Calves and Stirks forward this week with calves selling, once again, at Lancaster especially young beef calves with some buyers leaving short of requirements and empty handed. Leading the way this week was British Blue bull calves from J & G Thornley, Kirkham selling to £350 with others selling to £320 from JE & S Seedhall, Mellor and £300 from CR & A Baxter, Morecambe, with all British Blue bulls forward averaging £262. Simmental bull calves sold to £300 from M & C Booth, Kentmere with Angus bull calves selling to £280 from JE & S Seedhall. Heifer calves topped at £315 and £275 for British Blues from J & G Thornley with Charolais heifer calves selling to £265 from JE & S Seedhall. There was plenty of beef calves selling in the mid two hundreds.

Friesian bull calves sold to a top of £135 from DJ Hay, Cockerham with other Friesian bull calves selling to £120 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. A consignment of British Friesian bull calves at just three weeks old sold to £105 and £100 from A Pickthall, New Hutton.

A handful of weanlings forward today saw British Blue bullocks sell to £440 and heifers to £415.
